Major architectural renovations to this turn of the century shingle style house included lifting the house 24" to create a new cellar. The new design marries the house to the new elevation while enhancing ocean views to the south and east. The clients also requested a vegetable garden, clothes drying yard and two vehicular entrances. Sustainable practices include the use of permeable pavements and native materials and plants.
Crushed Rhode Island oyster shell provided the surface for the new driveways, and the walls were constructed with salvaged granite. Invasive thickets were replaced with native maritime shrub plants and meadows. Closer to the house, ornamental plants refer back to the period of the architecture.
