Chester Green

An undifferentiated parking lot occupies a central location of this small Connecticut River village. A group of active community members initiated the Schematic Master Plan to promote community interest and funding for the development of a multi-purpose village green and community garden. Inspired by the conceptual works of late local artist Sol Lewitt, the design plays on a series of repeated terraces in the landscape.

The design transforms a vacuous parking lot into a landscape that includes a farmers market, a community garden, a performance space, a new bus stop, off street parking, sidewalks and cross walks. These program elements are developed with sustainable structures, paving and drainage and to create a space that has year round interest in a dynamic community open space.
