The Cottages at Essex Meadows

These high end, sustainably designed cottages were built as an adjunct to an existing assisted living facility. In keeping with the project goals, the site design restores the native and vernacular landscape. In a departure from typical assisted living developments, lawn areas are minimized and replaced with sculptural drifts of indigenous ferns, grasses and wildflowers.

The plant palette also includes native shrubs, flowering and shade trees which augment the preserved remnant woodlands, enhance multi-seasonal beauty and increase site habitat and biodiversity. Meandering native fieldstone retaining walls soften the grade and lend a vernacular character to the site.
